With the academic year underway here in the UK, and ‘Freshers’ enjoying the delights of their new surroundings, we thought you might like to know that preparations for the launch of our revised and expanded website are well in hand.
Early next week, the new look www.elliotscientific.com will be up and running. Here’s a preview shot to give you an idea of what’s coming…

New PLUTO-2, with on-board dual-core processor and memory, plus new SLM panel from HOLOEYE

HOLOEYE has launched a new enhanced electronics driver module for existing and forthcoming Spatial Light Modulator (SLM) panels. The PLUTO-2 features an HDMI interface for addressing phase functions, a USB connection for advanced calibrations, and a trigger sync output for synchronising with external devices – such as colour-switchable lasers. The driver’s faster addressing speed allows for a colour-field-sequential (CFS) mode at 180 Hz input frame rate with the matching new PLUTO-2 SLMs and, as a bonus, also offers a more stable phase response.
The PLUTO-2 driver is equipped with a dual-core processor and on-chip memory, enabling user-programmed (Ubuntuâ„¢) additional functionality. For example, a slideshow of images can played back from a USB stick or internal memory without the need for a PC.
HOLOEYE has also added to their newly developed dielectric mirror range of panels. These enable use with higher incident power lasers due to the SLM’s coating, which reduces absorption. The models currently available are:
- PLUTO-UV-043: 350 to 420 nm with 90% reflectivity and >2.3π; phase retardation up to 405 nm
- PLUTO-VIS-056: 450 to 650 nm with 93% reflectivity and 2.5Ï€ phase retardation at 530 nm, 2.1 at 633 nm
- PLUTO-NIR-049: 1000 to 1100 nm with 93% reflectivity and 2Ï€ phase retardation up to 1064 nm

New Year, New Website

It has been a number of years since we last updated our website and a lot has happened in that time. Wide screen monitors for computers are now de rigueur, tablet and mobile devices are ubiquitous, and scientific research requires a more multi-disciplinary approach.
Last night we switched on our new website. Do have a look around, and if you find any bugs or errors, let us know.
New Model 224 Temperature Monitor precisely measures 12 channels down to 300 mK

The newly launched  Lake Shore Model 224 temperature monitor offers precision measurement in a wide range of cryogenic and higher-temperature applications with the ability to easily monitor up to 12 sensor channels.
Available for delivery from September, it provides better measurement performance in applications where researchers need to ensure accuracy and precision in their low cryogenic temperature monitoring. Used with Lake Shore’s Cernox™ sensors, the Model 224 enables reliable and repeatable temperature measurement over a broad range and as low as 300 mK.
Cernox thin-film RTD sensors offer high sensitivity and low magnetic field-induced errors at cryogenic temperatures. The Model 224 has been optimised for use with these well-respected thermometers, and features many of the same advanced capabilities of Lake Shore Model 336 temperature controller, including its proven high-precision input circuitry.
In addition to Cernox, the Model 224 supports other NTC RTDs, PTC RTDs such as platinum sensors, and diodes such as the Lake Shore DT-670 Series. In cryogenic applications, the monitor is an ideal addition to any university or commercial low-temperature research lab requiring measurement flexibility using multiple sensors and sensor types.
Used with silicon diodes, it provides accurate measurements in cryo-cooler and cryo-gas production applications from 1.4 K to above room temperature. Connected to PTC RTDs (platinum and rhodium-iron sensors), the Model 224 works well in cryogenic applications at liquid nitrogen temperatures.
